New CDC Guidance For Booster Shots

March 30, 2022

After the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made it’s recommendation that those people over the age of 50 and some immunocompromised individuals should get a second COVID-19 booster shot, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) followed suit with a formal recommendation as well.

The recommendation from the CDC indicates that those who are over the age of 50 and those who are immunocompromised if they have already received a full dose of the original vaccine and their initial booster shot should seek out a second booster shot roughly four months after that booster shot was administered. Citing waning efficacy of the the original booster shot, the CDC is now recommending that all persons who fit these criteria get boosted again.

Scientists are currently working on developing vaccines that will be more effective against the COVID-19 variants and it is expected that most people will need to get an additional dose of the vaccine sometime in the fall, but as of now, the recommendation is only for those over 50 and those who are immunocompromised.

As COVID-19 numbers remain low in the state of Connecticut, officials are urging residents to follow the new guidance so that the numbers stay that way. As of the writing of this post the numbers are very slowly creeping in the wrong direction and officials are hopeful that adding another booster shot to the mix will help protect residents who are in greater danger from the new variants.

Given the new recommendations it is more important then ever to make sure you are taking the necessary precautions with your loved ones who are aging in place. If they are fully vaccinated and boosted, it may also be important in certain scenarios for them to remain masked and socially distanced in order to protect themselves from serious illness and hospitalization.
