Stay Safe When Getting Food Delivered

January 12, 2023

When the weather is good and it’s a nice day to get your loved one who is aging in place out of the house it’s easy to find a place to head out and grab a bite to eat. However, when the weather gets cold and the roads are snowy and icy it can be a challenge to get them the food that they want or need without using a delivery service.

The good news is that delivery services are very easy to engage with in 2023 and even if you are not in the location you are having food delivered to you can place an order with relative ease. If you are planning on using a delivery service to provide some food to your loved one you should talk it over with them first and make sure they understand the pros and cons of getting food delivered from one of these services.

There are some things you will want to warn your loved one about when you’re working on getting them food delivered to their home. These safety tips will serve them well while they are eating well throughout the winter months.

1.) Always make sure your food is hot when it arrives and if it is not, make sure to check the temperature and reheat it accordingly. With delivery services, sometimes food can arrive 20-30 minutes after it was prepared. This can leave food lukewarm and can cause some problems for your loved one when they get their food. If the food is not hot, remind your loved one that they should put the food in a microwave safe container and heat it up to an acceptable temperature.

2.) When storing leftovers make sure the container that you are storing them in is airtight and will not let bacteria in, even when the food is stored in the refrigerator. If you are not storing food in an airtight container it can compromise the quality of the food and could lead to an illness.

3.) Inspect your food when it arrives. You can never be too safe when dealing with food that is coming from a delivery service. When the food arrives your loved one should look for signs of spoilage and notice any odors that might not be expected. If there are any signs of food that is not good you should report it to the delivery service and get a refund or another delivery of good food.

Delivery apps and services are a great way to get your loved one who is aging in place the food they need, especially during the winter months. If the appropriate precautions are being taken they can eat well without a lot of hassle until the weather warms up and they can head back out to their favorite restaurants. As long as you educate them on the safety steps they should take, everything should go according to plan.
